Driss el-Maloumi

Driss el-Maloumi was born in Agadir, Morocco in 1970. He went on to study Arab literature at university and also attended the National Musical School of Rabat from 1992-4. As well as Eastern and Western influences, he also incorporated tribal Berber oud playing into his compositions. Driss el-Maloumi has performed throughout Europe, the Middle East and South America, and also participated in the International Oud Meeting.

This CD is part of the Musique du Monde series and features a series of compositions in various maqamat, often accompanied by Lahoucine Baquir on percussion. Several pieces are in the Khoumassi style, which is inspired by Berber music.

On this recording, Driss el-Maloumi joins up with Malian kora virtuoso Ballake Sissoko and Madagascan valiha (tubular zither) master Rajery to create a fusion of Maghrebi and Sub-Saharan musical traditions. It all works extremely well, and hopefully this collaboration will continue.
