Mustafa al-Sunni was born in 1964 in Rafa’a, a town on the Blue Nile south of the Sudanese capital Khartoum. He taught himself to play the oud by listening to many other Sudanese players, although his main musical influence was the singer Abdal Aziz Da'ud. Mustafa al-Sunni now lives in exile in London.
